Builds
Posted by Beyond PC on June 12, 2021
Are you thinking about building a new computer and don't have the time or the experience to get the job done?

You're in luck! All you have to do is drop your parts off one day and pick up the finished machine the next.

The bench fee for all service orders is $25.

Labor for standard builds is $160. Gamer builds usually run $240.

Keep in mind hard-line tube bending is not included in this price, nor are custom wire mods.

If you want hard line tubing and/or custom wiring mods click here.

Here's a selection of machines I've built to give you an idea what I can pull off:

Frankenbuilds
Posted by Beyond PC on June 27, 2021
"Frankenbuilds" are the result of taking similar machines from the recycle pile and making them into complete working machines. I sell them to people in need for a fair price.

Rethermal
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
Over time the thermal compound on your CPU/GPU will harden and turn solid. When this happens the cooling ability of your CPU/GPU heatsink to cool your hot chips is greatly reduced.

Usually it starts with your computer fan getting loud and then if you ignore it long enough your PC will thermal-throttle or worse: shutdown.

As a preventative measure it's always good to bring your machine into a shop once a year (or two at most) and get the old thermal compound carefully removed and replaced with new.

Power Supply Replacement
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
Power supplies fail regularly; often times when you least expect it. If your machine won't turn on or exhibits unexplainable issues like random restarts or disappearing drives it could be a failing power supply.

I can test the power supply to determine if it's functioning properly and if it isn't we can either order a replacement or swap it out for a used one when I have them available.

Battery Replacement
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
Is your laptop only charging to 80%? Does it seem like the battery doesn't last as long as it did when it was new?

Over time as you charge and discharge your battery it gets weaker and the cells start to grow dendrites. If these dendrites touch it can cause a short circuit within the battery. When this happens you lose an entire cell and because your laptop usually has between 3 and 6 cells you'll see that it can partially charge but never reaches 100%

While this all sounds terrible the good news is that most replacement batteries run less than $40 and my labor to swap it out is on average $40. Sometimes it's less or more depending on the cost of the battery and the amount of labor involved but most battery replacements go out for ~$70 including parts and labor.

Data Backup
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
If you require a standard backup I can copy your files for $25. Usually this works as long as your drive is not malfunctioning.

Data Recovery
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
A lot of times I'm able to recover data from broken flash drives, hard drives and ssd's. If I can get your data it's $300 for the recovery and $25 for the bench fee.

If I cannot get your data after many attempts you may pickup your drive for only the bench fee, unless you have authorized the purchase of donor drive(s), in which case you will also pay for the donor drive(s)

Data recovery is a slow process so be prepared to be patient.

Operating System Install
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
Sometimes all your PC needs is a wipe and reinstall. I provide OS install services for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Licences / activation keys for Windows OS sold separately.

Ordering parts online is an adventure. Most times it goes well and is delivered on time. But every once in a while:

Motherboard Replacement
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
In some cases it's best to get a replacement motherboard...

Screen Replacement
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
I provide screen replacement services for most laptops. As long as I can find the replacement online - ordering, receiving and changing out the screen has an average 3-7 day turnaround time.

I do not have a supplier for Apple screens however often times you can find them used on Ebay / Amazon.

If you order the screen and want me to do the labor that's totally fine just call me and let me know you're coming.

Soldering
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
I can remove and replace most solderable components. The shop is equipped with microsoldering, soldering and reflow tools. I provide circuit troubleshooting for computer and laptop motherboards.

For non-computer related repairs (like car/rv/boat control boards) I ask that you first identify the problem, buy the replacement parts that it needs - then bring me both the board and the component(s) to perform the soldering. If it's something odd-ball please call and check first ^^.

Teardown
Posted by Beyond PC on June 28, 2021
Sometimes when mysterious issues are encountered the best course of action is a complete teardown and rebuild.

In the process I verify that each part is working correctly, ensure that the wiring is tidy and apply new thermal compound.

Pro Tip: Use Mogrify to Make Thumbnails
Posted by Beyond PC on June 19, 2021

Nearly every web developer runs into this problem at some point: you have a ton of subfolders with images inside them and you need to reduce their file-sizes to improve load times.

Here's a neat little linux one-liner that will find all JPG files in the current folder and subfolders. It will then remove the EXIF information and reduce the image quality to 86%.

Modify it as needed for your purposes:

find . -name '*.jpg' -exec mogrify -strip -quality 86 "{}" \;
